Walking Through the K-4 Classrooms

It was great fun visiting the K-4 classrooms this past week.  Early in the week, I stopped in to be with Ali’s 1st and 2nd grade learners where I was able to visit with Travis and Jonas who were reading over by the library.  It was exciting to see all of the kids engaged in reading and writing both independently and in small groups.  Colleen and Katie’s 1st and 2nd grade class were working on their writing when I stopped by to visit.  Both Colleen and Katie are two CLC veterans.  Both educators have been with CLC for many years.  Each year, I am amazed at how Colleen and Katie cultivate personal relationships—not only with each learner, but also with each learner’s family.  Over the years, Katie has worked as an educator in all of our K-4 grade levels.  My week ended with a visit to Alison and Elysha’s class where I had fun watching Alison introduce a new math game with her learners.  This week’s classroom visits reminded me how lucky we are to have such strong educators working with our children.

CLC’s Annual Back To School Picnic On Sunday!

Reminder that this Sunday is CLC’s annual Fall Picnic.  Each year, CLC comes together for a day of fun and community spirit at Arguello Park in San Carlos.  Tennis tournaments will be going on in the morning and a hearty BBQ will be in full swing in the afternoon.  The picnic is from 11:30-3:30 PM.  The weather is expected to be perfect.  We look forward to seeing everyone there!

San Bruno Tragedy Touches Many Community Members

The fire in San Bruno has had an impact on many CLC community members, as many of us know people in San Bruno who were affected by the fire.  Some community members also live in San Bruno.   Please keep the residents of San Bruno in your thoughts and consider helping out in some way if you can.  The local media has lots of information on what and how to donate.

Back To School Night is Next Week

This Wednesday, September 15, is the K-2 Back To School Night.  The training for parents who are working in K-2 classrooms this year will be from 5:45-6:15 PM on this day.  And, the Back To School events commence at 6:30 PM sharp.

The Back to School Night for grades 3-8 will be this Thursday, September 16, from 6:30-7:30 PM.  For both nights, it will be an exciting opportunity to learn more about your child’s classroom experience and learn a bit about what he/she will learn this year.  Stacy and I will be on hand as well should there be any additional questions.

Reminder: 7th and 8th grade parents are asked to meet in Carol’s classroom (M1) on Thursday from 6:00-6:30 PM  for a meeting about the upcoming 7th and 8th grade Milestone Trip.  Please be sure to attend this important informational meeting.

GC Meeting Tuesday, September 14, at 7:30 PM –Decision Expected on SCEF MOU

This Tuesday, in the CLC Library, the GC will meet for our September Board Meeting and I expect that the GC will vote on whether or not to accept the SCEF MOU.  I encourage everyone to come and share their views.  The GC has spent many hours discussing this matter both in open session and also in discussions with SCSD board members and SCEF board members.  All San Carlos Schools will have to approve this proposal in order to participate in the SCEF Foundation efforts this year.

Director’s Coffee This Morning – SCEF MOU Discussion Played Center Stage

About 20-25 CLC community members met this morning for this year’s Director’s Coffee.  It was a vibrant question and answer session about the impact (both positive and negative) of the SCEF agreement to cap fundraising at $100,000.  Though the budget picture is challenging for CLC in the out years under the SCEF agreement, I still feel strongly that CLC has the reserves to weather these challenges.  This agreement gives us the opportunity to put our fundraising skills to work for SCEF to help SCEF reach ever more ambitious funding goals.  So long as we can help SCEF maintain at least a 10% growth rate in their funding goals over the next 3-4 years, CLC should be able maintain its current program.  For the 10-11 fiscal year, SCEF hopes to raise two million dollars—representing a 17% increase in its funding goal compared to 09-10 funding goals.  A special thank you to all of you for your efforts this year to help SCEF reach its $1.7 million dollar goal.  This represents about $160,000 for CLC–a $35,000 increase compared to what we budgeted for.  Thank you, SCEF supporters!

It has been a great start to the 10-11 school year.  We have had a smooth start in all of our classes, our working relationship with the TL Leadership Team has never been better, we have Emma working with our kids full time–so much good news all around.  It is feeling like the beginning of a special CLC school year.
