SCSD Budget Deficit has Major Indirect Impact on CLC Finances

November 6, 2009

Dear CLC Community,

Earlier this week, the San Carlos School District announced that their school budget is being revised upward and one factor impacting this increase is an unanticipated increase in special education expenses by $900,000.  The San Carlos Charter Learning Center contracts its special education with the San Carlos School District.  CLC pays a percentage of the total special education costs within the San Carlos School District as contractual payment for allowing the San Carlos School District to provide special education services.

As a result of this significant increase in special education costs incurred by the San Carlos School District, I was notified by the SCSD that CLC will be charged in excess of $100,000 for the proportional share of their increase in expenses.  This additional expense hit to the CLC budget is proportionally as painful to the CLC budget as the $900,000 hit that the San Carlos School District is currently dealing with. This will impact CLC’s budget and we will need to address this added expense through other revenue enhancements.  I will be analyzing how this additional expense will impact our current budget.  I will be provding a more detailed report to the GC at the November meeting on November 18.

At the moment, we continue to maintain a balanced budget.  We are not operating at a deficit.  But, this unxpected fiscal impact has depleted almost all of our “cushion” as we move into another volatile state budget season.
