Notes on putting together the new CLC web site.

  • 2008-07-01: Using JA_Unity as our prototype template.

    JA_Unity busted
    See http://stijn.tintel.eu/blog/2008/03/24/joomla-15-template-ja_purity/
    Edit templates/ja_purity/ja_menus/Base.class.php line 32 and replace
        $menu = @JMenu :: getInstance();
    with
        $menu = &JSite::getMenu();

    Installed JEvents 1.5 ALPHA. Not ready for prime time. Will need to be replaced with either 1.4.2 with Legacy turned on or a different calendar module.

    Screwey model. Joomla doesn’t have “pages”. It has menus and menu items. Roughly speaking, a menu item is a page. But only roughly speaking as I think other things can be pages.
  • 2008-07-??
    No easy way to set up page templates. That is, declare various “page types” and associate templates with page types. For example a K-2 page template. Would be even nicer to “page sets”. For example, and K-2 page set has a main page, a gallery page, an events and field trips page, a volunteer tasks pag, etc; each page within the set is of a particular type and is associated with a page template

    Can’t figure out how to edit calendar without getting into the joomla “back end” and going to Components/JEvents. There must be some way to do it from the “front end”. Back end is WAY too ugly for normal folks.

    Article editor is very nice in some ways. But seriously wounded in others. Missing toolbar buttons/boxes to set text size, indent, ??? There is an button for “Edit CSS Style” but that is hardly easy to use.

    Trying to tweak templates is a pain. It might be that JA_Unity is just particularly hard to tweak. Or it might be joomla that makes it hard.
  • 2008-07-??
    While I can shrink size of left side menu contents, I’m having a devil of a time shrinking the size of the region of space it takes up …
  • 2008-07-??
    I can’t get a login link below the search box. It ends up eating up the space used by the Font size changing buttons.
  • 2008-07-??
    Where the heck do those Font size changing buttons come from. They aren’t in the HTML template or the CSS …

    Rather than create a separate menu for each cluster of related pages (Robin’s K/1 pages, Web Task Force pages), it seems like it should be possible to put them all in the main menu, and then use the menu module’s start level and end level parameters to show only the menu items for this page. Seems like a great idea. But it doesn’t seem to work. Gah. The top menu insists on showing everything, and not abide by the main menu module’s start and end level.

    Found where the font size changing buttons come from. The HTML template calls a function to generate them. AIIIEEEEE!!!!!!!!!!
  • 2008-07-16
    Figured out how to get all the menu items under the main menu and just show levels 0 and 1 in the top menu. Just had to change the html template, replacing “genMenu (0)” with “genMenu (0,1)”
